Job Description
Role purpose:
Within Biologicals Research, the Natural Products and Biomolecular Chemistry group based in Basel-St. Johann focuses on exploring and developing microbial-derived concepts to promote crop health and contribute to the evolution of agricultural practices.
In your role you will apply cutting-edge microbiology and bioengineering techniques to develop novel, sustainable agriculture solutions based on microbial sources. You will lead the development and implementation of analytical technologies to advance the biologicals portfolio derived from microbial and natural product sources, drive innovation in metabolomics approaches, optimize downstream processes, and ensure efficient compound supply from microbial fermentations while providing expert guidance to cross-functional teams, contributing to the successful progression of projects from discovery to development stages.
Accountabilities:
- Lead the analytical platform (HPLC-MS/MS/DAD) in the Natural Products and Biomolecular Chemistry group, driving continuous improvement and efficiency
- Develop and implement advanced metabolomics approaches for early identification and characterization of microbial metabolites, enhancing the discovery pipeline
- Conduct comprehensive characterization of microbial metabolites using MS/MS and NMR techniques
- Design and optimize downstream processing methods for fermentation processes, including the development of efficient purification schemes for high-purity compound isolation
- Provide expert supervision and mentorship to lab associates, fostering their professional growth and ensuring the team's overall scientific excellence
- Lead or Co-lead interdisciplinary projects within the Biologicals research portfolio
- Evaluate and implement new technologies in the analytical field, including the assessment and management of external partnerships to enhance internal capabilities
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in a relevant scientific field in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry or related disciplines
- Advanced expertise in analytical technologies, with strong focus on MS and MS/MS data analysis and interpretation
- In-depth understanding and optimization of purification methods for natural products and biomolecules (enzymes, proteins)
- Comprehensive knowledge of microbial metabolite characterization using MS/MS and NMR spectral interpretation
- Thorough understanding of biosynthetic principles in natural product pathways
- Proven track record in analysing and interpreting large analytical datasets
- Experience in leading and managing analytical chemistry in research projects
- Track record of successful collaboration in interdisciplinary scientific teams
- Background in natural product chemistry and biosynthesis, experience with advanced data analysis tools for metabolomics is an advantage
